I would again like to thank those of our clients who helped us by participating in our recent survey. Overall, the results were very positive, and we also received some important suggestions. We will be taking your advice into consideration, and implementing many ideas. If you have not taken the survey yet, you are still welcome to do so by visiting: Mutt Magic Satisfaction Survey

Mutt Magic Training ServicesIt came to my attention through the survey that some of our clients are not aware that we accept online payments. Any products or services purchased directly from Mutt Magic may be purchased online (additional fees do apply) by visiting our website: Shop Online. We do offer secure shopping, and our shopping cart is powered by PayPal. If any products or services that you would like to purchase are not immediately available on the site, you may also purchase through PayPal at: aja@muttmagic.com.

Other suggestions included offering a training blog where questions may be asked and answered online between courses. Great idea! Definitely look forward to this in the weeks to come. We will also be expanding our food and product line regularly, and looking into offering returning client and referral discounts. Stay tuned for updates! Thanks again for all of your input.

Sincerely,

Aja Harris

Featured Rescue

The Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation

The IGRF is a non-profit organization with volunteers nationwide dedicated to re-homing Italian Greyhounds who have been abandoned at animal shelters, taken from abusive/neglectful homes, or surrendered to animal rescues. Our rescue dogs are fostered in loving homes where their health and temperament are evaluated (and improved when possible) while they await adoption. Adoption applicants are screened thoroughly to ensure a good match for each dog as well as the adoptive family.

Training Tips

Training Tips

Crate-training your adult, or newly adopted dog

Mutt Magic Training Services

Crate-training is recommended for many behavioral problems, for newly adopted dogs, as well as for puppies. Following are some tips that will help you appropriately crate-train your adult and/or newly adopted dog. Please keep in mind that crate-training may be approached differently puppies.

There is occasionally the need to crate-train adult dogs. This is most often to control behavioral problems, with the purpose of protecting the dog, and your property. Additionally, crate training is beneficial when needed to housebreak a newly adopted adult dog. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks!!

As noted in our last edition, housebreaking is best accomplished by choosing an appropriate sized crate. Newly adopted dogs often need to re-learn housebreaking rules. Some may need to learn it for the first time. The crate is ideal for this purpose.  It should be only large enough for your dog to comfortably stand up, turn around, and lay down. If the crate is any larger, be prepared for accidents! The crate should also be bare-bottom at this stage, aside from the tray in wire crates. Any absorbent material will also encourage accidents.

For behavioral concerns (separation anxiety comes to mind) crating the dog is for his own safety! When anxious, some dogs become destructive, and can harm themselves as well as your property. A sturdy crate can provide a safe-zone, and if introduced properly, is usually very comforting for your dog.

When adjusting your dog to the crate, I find that the slow introduction method used for puppies can actually build anxiety in older dogs. It is best to place your dog in the crate as needed, and simply pay attention to any cues of anxiety. Not all dogs become anxious in the crate, but if you notice negative behaviors, there are some things that you can do to help your dog adjust. First, don't make a big deal out of crate time. In fact, it may be best to not speak or pay any attention to your dog for about 15 minutes prior to, or following, crate time. Only allow your dog out of the crate when she is calm. Allowing free time if she is barking or being anxious rewards this behavior. You may feed in the crate, allow special "crate-only" toys, and even cover wire crates to build additional comfort for your dog.

Good luck! Please stay-tuned to our next newsletter for our tips on traveling with your dog.
