Featured Rescue
The Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation
The IGRF is a non-profit organization with volunteers nationwide dedicated to re-homing Italian Greyhounds who have been abandoned at animal shelters, taken from abusive/neglectful homes, or surrendered to animal rescues. Our rescue dogs are fostered in loving homes where their health and temperament are evaluated (and improved when possible) while they await adoption. Adoption applicants are screened thoroughly to ensure a good match for each dog as well as the adoptive family.

Training Tips
Crate-training your puppy |

Crate-training is recommended for many behavioral problems, for newly adopted dogs, as well as for puppies. Following are some tips that will help you appropriately crate-train your puppy. Please keep in mind that crate-training may be approached differently with adult dogs, and when behavioral management is of concern.
The number-one reason to crate-train your puppy is that it helps with housebreaking!! Following closely behind this is the need to protect your puppy during that nasty teething phase. A crate should be used if you are away from home, as well as if you are unable to supervise your puppy when you are home. The general rule is that a puppy can remain in a crate for his age in months, plus two. This means that a 4-month old puppy should reasonably be able to stay in a crate up to 6 hours before needing to relieve himself, and come out for a stretch, or RUN. . .
Housebreaking is best accomplished by choosing an appropriate sized crate. The crate that is used should be only large enough for your puppy to comfortably stand up, turn around, and lay down. If the crate is any larger, be prepared for accidents! The crate should also be bare-bottom at this stage, aside from the tray in wire crates. Any absorbent material will encourage accidents.
Protecting your puppy during the teething phase is more important than you may imagine. More than one puppy has been shocked by chewing electrical cords, and several more than that have needed surgery to remove an obstruction from the G.I. tract. Crating your puppy can save his life, and your wallet! You may choose a few appropriate chew toys for your puppy that may remain in the crate. These toys or treats should be completely digestible, or indestructible. Examples are pig ears, natural (raw) marrow bones, and Kong or Kong-style rubber toys. Depending on the level of chewing, Nylabone may be appropriate as well.
When adjusting your puppy to the crate (keep in mind, this is different for adult dogs) you should do so slowly, if at all possible. If you can plan bringing your new puppy home during a vacation, this may help with timing. Allow your puppy to remain in the crate for brief, but increasing, amounts of time. This time will vary depending on your dog and his level of comfort. Always remember to praise and reward for good behavior. It may also be a good idea to feed your puppy in the crate if he needs help adjusting. Allowing your dog to have special "crate-only" treats may also help.
Good luck! Please stay-tuned to our next newsletter for help on how to adjust your adult (or newly adopted) dog to a crate. |
